A 54-year-old Canyon Country man who allegedly drove the wrong way on Highway 14 Monday, causing a multi-car pileup that injured 13, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence at the time of the crash, a California Highway Patrol officer said Tuesday.

The man, identified as Rick Allen Walker, was arrested for DUI shortly after the crash Monday afternoon, according to CHP Officer Jennifer Cassidy.

He was allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine when the crash occurred about a mile south of Escondido Canyon Road.

A CHP official said the arrest was made while the driver was being treated at Antelope Valley Hospital.

The crash occurred shortly after 4:35 p.m. when a vehicle traveling the wrong way in the northbound lanes of Highway 14 slammed into oncoming traffic.

The collision eventually involved nine vehicles.

The pileup shut down all northbound Highway 14 lanes between Agua Dulce Canyon Road and Escondido Canyon Road for several hours.

CHP investigators told The Signal Monday night that 13 people were injured in the crash. Three people were critically injured and 10 were reported to have minor injuries.
