Saugus senior Austin Davenport received a scholarship offer from New Mexico State.

Saugus High senior linebacker Austin Davenport was offered a football scholarship by NCAA Division I (Football Bowl Subdivision) school New Mexico State, Centurions head coach Jason Bornn told The Signal on Monday.

Davenport, a 2012 All-Santa Clarita Valley and All-Foothill League first-teamer becomes the first Saugus player to receive a scholarship offer prior to his senior season since quarterback Desi Rodriguez in 2008.

Rodriguez played for the Air Force Academy.

“It’s the culmination of four years of hard work and commitment to his craft,” Bornn said of Davenport. “He earned every bit of this and will be looking at more offers down the road. He has the size and talent to play at the next level and more importantly the intellect and passion.”

Davenport, a 6-foot, 3-inch, 225-pound senior-to-be had 53 tackles, two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble in 2012, and also played quarterback and tight end last season.

New Mexico State plays in the Western Athletic Conference and went 1-11 overall last season.
