The issue of censured school board member Stephen Winkler’s legal residency is expected be debated at the Saugus Union School District meeting Tuesday night. Some expect the board to fire him by declaring his seat vacant.

Winkler, who was censured by the board in a 4-1 vote Thursday night after a raucous public meeting, signed legal papers requesting a restraining order that establish his residence in Sylmar, board President Judy Umeck said Friday.

A Sylmar residence would put his home well outside the legal boundaries of the Saugus district.

However, Winkler is registered to vote within the district, and a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Office of Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk says that allows him to represent the district if duly elected by voters.

Many parents in the district called for his resignation Thursday night over his online postings about Nazis and animal cruelty.

Winkler was elected by popular vote in 2011.

At least two of Winkler’s fellow board members have said they want him off the board. But the controversial member has told The Signal he has no intention of resigning.

The meeting is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 24930 Avenue Stanford in Valencia.
