A pair of College of the Canyons freshmen, Tim White and Anthony Fowler, are headed to the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships this week in Des Moines, Iowa.

White, a Hart High graduate, will compete in the triple jump while Fowler is running in the 400 meters.

Both qualified after stellar performances in their respective events this season at the California Community College Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 18.

At that event, White won a state title in the triple jump with a leap of 51 feet, 3.5 inches while Fowler finished eighth in the 400 in 48.97 seconds.

Earlier in the season, Fowler had set a school record in the event with a time of 47.49 seconds.

The two athletes are eligible for the Junior championships because neither will turn 20 in 2013.

Previous COC athletes to compete at the Junior National meet include runner Chris Low and decathlete Justin Skinner.

White is scheduled to compete at 9:45 a.m. Pacific Time on Thursday and Fowler will run in the 400 prelim at 12:15 p.m. on Friday. If Fowler advances to the finals, he’ll race at 11:54 a.m. on Saturday.

The Junior Nationals will serve as the selection meet for 2013 Pan American Junior Championships, to be held from August 23-25 in Medellin, Colombia.

In addition to the Junior Nationals, the 2013 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be going on at the same location this week. The Master’s College’s John Gilbertson will compete in the 10,000-meter race of that meet, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Pacific Time on Thursday.
