Sexual Assaults in the Military

The Senate Armed Services Committee is investigating an alarming Pentagon survey which revealed over 26,000 sexual assaults in our military ranks last year.

Although almost a quarter of female troops in combat zones reported being victims of sexual assaults, most of the reported victims were not female but male (with 54 percent of the incidents reported).

Two contributing factors are being suggested.

First is the sexually exploitative culture in our military, which is fueled, in part, by the sale of pornography in the exchange services and on ships and by access to pornography through electronic devices or other means on military bases.

Second, when the current administration ordered military leaders to overturn their "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" policy, it completely ignored concerns that it could be a problem to have people attracted to the same sex living in close quarters.

Unfortunately, elections have consequences.
