I want to thank the four members of the Saugus Union School District board who carefully considered the motion of censure against fellow board member Stephen Winkler on Thursday evening.

At the opening, board member Douglas Bryce presented the evidence and his conclusions in a clear and concise manner. The audience and Stephen Winkler knew the exact points of interest under consideration.

Board President Judy Eagan Umeck conducted the meeting in a very professional manner, keeping the discussion civil and relevant to the points of censure.

Stephen Winkler was allowed to speak freely and given ample time to defend himself after the points of censure were read and following the period of public comment.

At the conclusion of the meeting, all of the board members except Mr. Winkler voted in the affirmative for issuing the censure. As private citizens, the board members individually expressed their desire for Mr. Winkler to resign his position on the board.

The board’s action reflected the unanimous opinion of those assembled in the room.

All of the people who took the time and effort to attend this meeting found Stephen Winkler’s public Internet postings to be abhorrent and outside the standards we expect for a school board member.

Yet process does matter, and I want to assure this community that the board was very fair to Stephen Winkler.

I want to extend my thanks and kudos to school board members Judith Eagen Umeck, Doug Bryce, Paul De La Cerda and Rose Koscielny for their actions on Thursday night.

The Saugus Union School District is well served by these individuals.
