Hart junior swimmer Matt Johnson won four Foothill League titles during his junior season.

Hart High swimmer Matt Johnson isn’t the biggest kid on the deck.

But when he gets into the water, he’s certainly one of the fastest.

The Indians junior topped a dominant sophomore season — in which he was The Signal’s All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Swimmer of the Year — with an even more impressive junior campaign.

Johnson was Hart’s top swimmer throughout a season in which Valencia was expected to challenge Hart for the league crown.

After teammate Cole Cogswell went down with an injury, Johnson was leaned on even harder come Foothill League finals.

At the meet, Johnson helped win the 200-yard medley relay in record time, set an individual league record with a title in the 200 free (1 minute, 42.36 seconds), won the 500 free and helped set another record with a league title in the 400 free relay.

But it was the next week where Johnson really separated himself from the rest of the Foothill League.

At the CIF-Southern Section Division I championship meet, Johnson was the best boys swimmer from the Santa Clarita Valley.

In an exciting 200-yard freestyle race, Johnson shot out of the gate on the first 100 meters.

Down the stretch, Johnson never let up, finishing second with a 1:39.60 and was sixth.

He added a sixth-place finish in the 500 free, improving on his 10th-place and 9th-place finishes from his sophomore and freshman seasons, respectively.

And with one more season to go, the sky is the limit.

For now, though, he is The Signal’s 2013 All-SCV Boys Swimmer of the Year for the second straight season.
