FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A sheriff's spokesman is providing new details on the arrest of Fresno's fire chief, saying he knocked his wife to the ground and choked another family member.

Fresno County sheriff's spokesman Chris Curtice says Chief Rob Brown struck his wife Beth Brown more than once and twice knocked her on the floor late Wednesday. Beth Brown is Fresno's city emergency manager.

Curtice tells the Fresno Bee that Brown then choked another family member Curtice did not identify. The couple has four sons. A family member pepper-sprayed Brown before deputies responding to a 911 call arrested him.

The 50-year-old Brown posted bail Thursday.

The chief has been placed on leave. A call to his office was referred to the city manager. A message left at his home was not immediately returned.
