Reputed Gang Members Charged in Santa Monica Shootings

Two reputed gang members were charged today with murder and attempted murder and a third man was charged with being an accessory in connection with a shooting on Tuesday near Santa Monica College, the District Attorney’s Office announced.

Christopher Chonan Osumi, 19 (dob 6-30-93), Meliton Lorenzo Lopez, 23 (dob 9-26-89), and Noah Jason Farris, 32 (dob 1-22-81), are set to be arraigned after 1:30 p.m. at Los Angeles Superior Court, Airport Branch, Department 144.

Around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, Osumi allegedly opened fire on two men standing in the 1500 block of Michigan Avenue, shooting both victims multiple times. Santa Monica resident Gil Verastegui, 29, later died. The second victim remains hospitalized.

Osumi and Lopez are charged in case SA084382 with one count each of murder and attempted murder with gang allegations. The complaint alleges Osumi personally discharged a handgun. Farris is charged with being an accessory. Prosecutors will ask bail be set at $3 million each for Osumi and Lopez and $500,000 for Farris.

Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Barnes with the Hardcore Gang Division is prosecuting the case.

If convicted, Osumi and Lopez face up to life in state prison. Farris faces up to seven years in state prison.
