About a dozen Grandmothers for Peace will return to the corner of McBean Parkway and Valencia to protest the war in Iraq from 3 p.m. 4 p.m. Sunday.

Since March 20, 2003, when the War on Iraq began, grandmothers and others from all different walks of life gather on the corner of McBean Parkway and Valencia on the first Sunday of every month to express their opposition to the war.

Although grandmothers are the leading participants, they are not alone. Daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles and students from College of the Canyons band together to promote peace and denounce the war effort.

They carry signs depicting the number of deceased soldiers in Iraq as well as other things they consider atrocities.

Grandmothers for Peace is a national organization with a subbranch nestled in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Patty Carmody is founder of the Santa Clarita division; Carole Lutness, grandmother and 38th Assembly Committee chair for the Democratic Party, is deeply involved in the efforts.
