Patti Rasmussen named to city Arts Commission

Santa Clarita City Council members voted unanimously Tuesday night to appoint local resident Patti Rasmussen to the city’s Arts Commission to replace outgoing Commissioner Paul Strickland.

Councilwoman Laurene Weste nominated Rasmussen out of a list of four candidates who had applied to replace Strickland, who resigned in May to take a consulting job in Florida.

Since Weste was the council member to appoint Strickland, she was charged with nominating his replacement.

Weste said one of the biggest unfinished goals for the commission is the creation of a nonprofit arts foundation, which would be able to apply for state and federal grants that the city is unable to apply for.

“I looked at the applicants and would like to appoint somebody I have seen do those types of things,” Weste said.

Rasmussen will fill the remainder of Strickland’s term, which ends in July 2014. She is expected to officially join the commission for its next meeting on Thursday.

The city Arts Commission is a five-member panel that advises city officials on public art and art programs in Santa Clarita.

Rasmussen’s accolades were echoed by other council members and her appointment was approved unanimously.

Councilman TimBen Boydston, who called Rasmussen an “excellent choice” for the commission, said he also voted “yes” out of respect of the rights of his fellow council members to appoint commissioners.

Boydston had two of his nominations for city commission positions denied by his fellow council members last July.
