A 46-year-old Canyon Country woman driving a catering truck was killed and her passenger injured following a two-truck traffic collision Tuesday on Highway 126 at Commerce Center Drive in Castaic.

California Highway Patrol officers said the deceased woman, identified as Dunia G. Abrego, was driving one of the two trucks involved and was not wearing a seat belt. She was ejected from her vehicle, said CHP Sgt. John Lutz.

A woman identified as Juana Martinez, whose home town was unknown, was taken by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Lutz said.

About 1:05 p.m. Tuesday, emergency response crews were dispatched to reports of a traffic collision involving a truck on fire with people hurt, said Inspector Keith Mora of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“A 52-year-old man from Grants Pass, Oregon, in a 2010 Azusa box truck was eastbound on 126 traveling 55 miles per hour,” Lutz said.

“At approximately 1:05 p.m., a 1989 catering truck exited Valencia Travel Village directly into the path of the (Azusa) vehicle,” he said.

The box truck driver, identified as Loren Montgomery, braked but was “unable to avoid colliding” with the other vehicle, the CHP sergeant said.

The box truck, a Ryder rental, had front-end damage on its passenger side. The food truck was overturned on its side on the grassy roadside shoulder, said Lutz.

“Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash,” he said. Montgomery was not injured in the collision, whose cause was under investigation.
