Life in the slow lane — drive slowly

I recently witnessed a very near collision on the 405 freeway, and so this letter is written with the hope that it may save lives. As I was driving in the middle lane, a car ahead of me in the "slow lane" was traveling, my guess would be about 65, and as it approached an on-ramp, a car was attempting to enter the freeway.

A collision was missed only by inches as the driver in the slow lane swerved at the last minute.

The incident made me ask myself some questions: What is an appropriate speed when driving in the slow lane? If one is driving in the slow lane, what is his or her obligation for allowing drivers to enter the freeway from an on-ramp?

In the incident that I witnessed, the slow-lane driver seemed oblivious to the car entering the freeway. He could have slowed down (he may have been on cruise control) or moved into the middle lane.

And I think 65 is a bit much for the slow lane.

If you’re driving in the slow lane, I think you have an obligation to do what you can safely do to allow drivers to enter the freeway, and I would like to urge all drivers to exercise caution and courtesy and drive at a safe speed in the slow lane.
