Today is a “fee free” day in the Angeles National Forest, which means no National Forest Adventure Pass is required to enjoy nearby wild lands.

The U.S. Forest Service schedules fee free days occasional to try to encourage residents to visit the forest. Today’s event was scheduled for “National Get Outdoors Day.”

Residents are invited to volunteer to help clean up debris in the national forest. Operation Super Canyon Sweep 2013 is scheduled at the San Gabriel Canyon Off Highway Vehicle Area on San Gabriel Canyon (Highway 39) about two miles north of San Gabriel Reservoir at 8 a.m.

National Get Outdoors Day is an annual observance that began in 2008 to encourage families, and particularly children, to seek healthy lives and to appreciate forests and other natural areas.

Studies have found that American children spend 50 percent less time in the outdoors than they did 20 years ago.
