More people read, watched and viewed The Signal in print and online during May 2013, than in any month in the 94-year history of the company, said an executive with the newspaper on Thursday.

The website garnered 203,974 unique visitors in May - up 35 percent from May 2012, said Chief Multimedia Officer, Vince Johnson.

The news organization’s website also attracted more than 1.3 million page views — up 46 percent from May 2012, Johnson said.

The numbers not only were record-breaking for the month of May, he said, but both numbers were record-highs for the news organization.

Google Analytics, which compiles and verifies traffic data for websites, is free and available for use by any company or organization.

“The Signal is proud to stand behind its numbers,” Johnson said. “We believe transparency is key to credibility.”

The multimedia organization posted Google Analytics’ report on the newspaper’s website for all to inspect, he said. It can be viewed at

While nearly 62 percent of the visitors are returning customers, more than 38 percent were new readers, according to Google Analytics.

Key to the numbers, however, is the fact that nearly one-quarter of a million viewers in May were unique visitors — individual readers as counted by different IP addresses.

“The number of unique visitors to a website is important for advertisers who want to make sure they are reaching a broad audience and not just a small group who click on a website multiple times,” Johnson said.

“We continue to add new products and offer advertising solutions for our customers, and we believe that May’s numbers reflect the beginning of a long period of growth for The Signal,” he said.

This week The Signal also posted two video shorts online featuring the news organization’s staff.

In the videos, titled “I Am The Signal,” reporters and photojournalists speak personally about what Santa Clarita and community reporting means to each of them.
