Two of the more than 2,100 firefighters working to contain the Powerhouse Fire were airlifted to the hospital today afternoon where they will be treated for heat exhaustion, a fire official said.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m. today, a helicopter touched down near Lake Hughes Road and Cottonwood Campground to pick up two firefighters and take them to a hospital, said Inspector Scott Miller of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The call for medical help was received by county fire officials at 2:30 p.m., he said.

Nathan Judy, spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service, identified the patients as firefighters.

Once the helicopter arrived at the fire line, paramedics plucked the two injured firefighters from a hillside where efforts were under way to contain the Powerhouse Fire, which has burned more than 32,000 acres since Thursday.

They were flown to Palmdale for medical treatment.
