For the second time in as many weeks, deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station will stage a checkpoint within the Santa Clarita city limits Friday to catch drivers who may be unlicensed or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The checkpoint will be held at an undisclosed location within the city limits between 6 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the station.

Such checkpoints serve as a “proven deterrent” to DUI offenses and educate drivers on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the news release.

The Sheriff’s Station staged a similar checkpoint last Thursday at the intersection of Soledad Canyon Road and Golden Oak Road in Saugus. During that eight-hour checkpoint, one person was arrested on suspicion of DUI and 13 others were cited and sent to court for violations of the California Vehicle Code.

Another 10 people were sent to court for driving without a license or with a license that had been suspended or revoked.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials have investigated 212 DUI collisions over the past three years that resulted in fatalities or injuries.

Funding for Friday’s checkpoint and similar checkpoints held throughout the year comes from a grant.
