SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Prison officials say one inmate has died and two others are seriously injured after a fight that involved about 40 inmates at a state prison in the San Joaquin Valley.

Wasco State Prison spokesman Lt. Floyd Harl says a guard fired one bullet to quell the fighting that broke out after 9 a.m. Monday in an exercise yard. He says it is not yet known if the guard's bullet caused any of the injuries.

Harl says no employees were injured, and officials don't know what set off the fight at the Kern County facility.

Three inmates were taken to an outside hospital, and one was pronounced dead at about 10 a.m. Harl says the cause of death is unknown. He did not know if any inmate-made weapons were found.
