Cal Poly's Brian Mundell celebrates with teammate Nick Torres after hitting a home run against San Diego during the first inning on Friday in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Valencia High graduate Brian Mundell homered and had four RBIs to lead No. 2 seed Cal Poly to a 9-2 victory — its first in the NCAA tournament — over San Diego in an opening-round game of the Los Angeles regional Friday.

Cal Poly (40-17) broke the game open with six runs in the sixth inning, with Mundell and Jimmy Allen each hitting two-run singles. The Mustangs lost twice in their only other regional appearance in 2009.

Joey Wagman (13-3) allowed six hits in eight innings for the win. PJ Conlon (9-1) took the loss.

Mundell gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead with a solo homer — his 11th — in the first inning. He added a sacrifice fly RBI in the fifth. Allen had four hits for Cal Poly, which reached 40 wins for the third time.

Connor Joe and Austin Green each had two hits for San Diego (35-24).

The Mustangs will now face UCLA on Saturday, giving Mundell the chance to clash with two former Foothill League rivals in the Bruins Shane Zeile, a fellow Valencia graduate and Pat Valaika, a 2009 Hart graduate.
