MARTINEZ, Calif. (AP) — Contra Costa County prosecutors have charged a former high school football coach with 16 counts of child sex abuse.

Fifty-one-year-old Barron Edwards of San Lorenzo was charged on Tuesday with three counts of rape, 12 counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under age 14, and one count of lewd and lascivious acts on a child age 14 or 15.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Nancy Georgiou says the charges also include special enhancements alleging multiple victims.

Authorities say the alleged crimes occurred with two minors in the 1980s and 1990s.

Edwards, who was varsity football coach at Kennedy High School in Richmond in 2004 and 2005, was arrested at his home last week.

He is being held at the Contra Costa County jail on $21.2 million bail. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
