Thieves target high-end bikes in Valencia

Bicycle thieves have been using blowtorches to steal high-end bikes locked in front of locations in downtown Valencia, a sheriff’s deputy said Wednesday.

“These thieves are using some type of blowtorches to remove the bicycle locks,” said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“The bicycles that are stolen are high-end bicycles often times with high-end, nice locking devices,” said Dubin.

“These bicycles are locked up outside in public view.”

In the past couple of weeks, thieves have stolen several bicycles around the Valencia Town Center area and several from the Madison Apartments across McBean Parkway from the mall, Dubin said.

One of the bikes stolen was from Golds Gym, he said. A cyclist who rode to the gym returned to find his bike gone.
Detectives are scrutinizing a grainy surveillance video in which a thief is seen cutting through a bicycle lock with a torch.

Once the torch-wielding thief cut through the lock, he rode away on the stolen bike in the direction of the Spectrum Club on Town Center Drive.

The bicycle thieves target expensive vehicles and work mostly at night, Dubin said.

“We would advise people to leave their valuables locked in their garage when they’re not home — even if you have an expensive lock for your bicycle,” Dubin said.
