A Palmdale man accused of robbing a Newhall bank last week pleaded not guilty today to the charge of robbery, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Demarie Rashad Mackey, 23, entered the plea in San Fernando Superior Court, Lt. Chris Brackpool of the Major Crimes Bureau said Wednesday.

Mackey remains in custody, held without bail.

On Saturday shortly before 10:45 a.m., a lone male with a stocking over his face and armed with a small handgun entered the Bank of America branch on Valley Street near Lyons Avenue and stole an undisclosed amount of money, said Lt. Tom Bryski of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

No shots were fired and no one was hurt.

Within 15 minutes of the holdup, deputies caught up with the suspect just north of Sand Canyon on the northbound Highway 14 freeway, Bryski said.

Deputies stopped a red Toyota Camry at that location and detained the driver, Mckey, at gunpoint.

He was arrested shortly before noon and booked into custody at the local sheriff’s station.
