JOSHUA TREE, Calif. (AP) — California Highway Patrol authorities say a crash that killed a 26-year-old woman was caused by a Marine falling asleep at the wheel of a Humvee and drifting into oncoming traffic in Joshua Tree.

KCDZ-FM reported Wednesday ( ) that 19-year-old Juan Lira, an active-duty Marine, was not injured in the April crash.

Officer Alex Lowe says investigators believe the heavy military vehicle crossed over into westbound traffic after Lira fell asleep, striking the Ford driven by 26-year-old Kristen Thrawl.

Thrawl's vehicle was overturned, causing major head injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
