Council approves contract for school safety improvements

With a unanimous vote, members of the Santa Clarita City Council approved a $229,588 contract for improvements at student crossings near three local elementary schools.

These improvements include restriping crosswalks, replacing school signs with more visible signs and constructing “bulb-outs” at select crossings. Bulb-outs widen sidewalks at pedestrian crossings, which narrows the street, allowing pedestrians to get through a crossing quicker and slowing traffic through an intersection.

Improvements are planned near Fair Oaks Ranch Community School, Mountainview Elementary School and Plum Canyon Elementary School. The city has already completed similar projects at 15 other local schools, according to council documents.

The contract was awarded Tuesday night to the Santa Clarita firm R.C. Becker and Son Inc. for $229,588. Contingency funds could boost the total value of the contract to $275,505.
