Valencia High graduate Max Homa shot an even-par 70 on Tuesday and his No. 1 ranked Cal golf team stands in fifth place after one day of the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships at the Crabapple Course at the Capital City Club in Milton, Ga.

This marked the first day of stroke play in the 30-team tournament.

The top eight squads after Thursday will move on to Friday’s first round of match play.

The champion will be determined on Sunday in a one-on-one match play showdown.

Arizona State is in first place with a team score of 10-under.

Cal’s at 3-under.

Homa, a 2009 Valencia High graduate and an All-Pac-12 first-teamer, is tied for 33rd individually.

ASU’s Jon Rahm leads the pack at 9-under.

“I hit the ball well today and chipped really well also, but I just really didn’t take advantage of my opportunities on the greens and hole enough putts,” Homa said. “But even par is always good. I’m not displeased with it, but it really had the potential to be something pretty good today.”

Cal’s first golfers will tee off at 4 a.m. Pacific Time.
