Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies will stage a checkpoint Thursday to screen drivers who may be unlicensed, without insurance or operating their vehicles under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The checkpoint will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday and run until 2 a.m. and be located somewhere within the city limits. It will be placed with “the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provid(ing) the greatest safety for officers and the public,” according to a news release from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Locations of checkpoints are not revealed ahead of time.

Sheriff’s deputies stage checkpoints at regular intervals as a way to deter people from drunk driving, according to the news release. This is the first checkpoint run by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station this month, but two checkpoints in April netted a total of three DUI arrests.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station has investigated 212 fatal and injury DUI collisions over the past three years, according to a news release from the station.

Funding for the checkpoint comes from a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
