Five people were injured near Agua Dulce Monday afternoon - two seriously, three moderately - when a truck towing a trailer flipped over onto its side on Highway 14 at Escondido Canyon Road, emergency response officials said.

Shortly after 2:45 p.m., the truck - initially reported to be a big rig - southbound on the highway overturned just south of Escondido Canyon Road prompting responding paramedics to call for another ambulance and a rescue helicopter, said Inspector Bernard Peters Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“We got the call from the CHP (California Highway Patrol) for an overturned truck,” he said.

CHP officers reported large pieces of metal strewn across the southbound lanes.

An additional ambulance was dispatched to the crash at 2:51 p.m., Peters said.

At 3:10 p.m., CHP officers shut down southbound lanes of the highway to accommodate a “life flight” helicopter landing for at least one of the injured people.
