A brush fire that swelled up in Castaic was doused almost immediately by a water-loaded helicopter already involved in fighting a brush fire in Val Verde, a Fire Department official said.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. Monday, as firefighting units were busy trying to contain a fire in Val Verde, they received reports of a fire near an open lot at the intersection of The Old Road and Parker Road, said Supervisor Kyle Sanford of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

At a point in the efforts to contain the earlier fire, one of the firefighting helicopters had an opportunity to dump one of its loads of water onto the Castaic fire.

The single water dump extinguished all open flame and effectively put out the fire that burned about one quarter of an acre, Sanford said.
