A baby boy involved in a near drowning at a Valencia pool late Sunday afternoon was airlifted to a Los Angeles hospital, emergency response officials said.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department were dispatched to a swimming pool at the North Glen Apartments on Magic Mountain Parkway between Valencia Boulevard and Bouquet Canyon Road, said Inspector Bernard Peters.

Within five minutes of their arrival, firefighters began arranging for intersections to be shut down along McBean Parkway between Valencia Boulevard and Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in order to accommodate an ambulance transporting the infant.

Those plans changed, and instead arrangements were made to have the child taken by helicopter to Childrens’ Hospital Los Angeles with intersections shut down along Railroad Avenue between Magic Mountain Parkway and 13th Street.

The rescue helicopter touched down in a field opposite Fire Station #73, near 13th Street.

One of the paramedics reported en route to the helicopter landing zone that “the baby’s crying, the baby’s crying” - an indication the child was breathing, said Peters.

The helicopter took off from Newhall at about 7 p.m.
