College inspiration

Here’s a community “feel-good” story for you.

Just when I think I’m doing enough, I run into someone doing more. I’ve been waiting to take advantage of the new College of the Canyons campus in Canyon Country ever since I witnessed it being built.

I’m a senior citizen, and college has been brought right to my doorstep. Tuesday night was my “new beginning” in my return to the academic world, and I was as excited as can be. The confusion of the new semester notwithstanding, I navigated up the hill for my new class. On top of the hill was a volunteer/assistant out on a clear but cold night, waiting with a flashlight and a schedule to assist all new students.

She was directing new students to their destinations, encouraging them while she did it. I asked her name and she replied, “Dena Maloney, dean of students.”

Gee, I thought I cared about my flock. But then I ran into Dena Maloney doing her job, above and beyond the call of duty.
Is this a great community, or what?
