It was a good day for distance runners at The Master’s College on Friday.

Senior John Gilbertson and freshman Karis Frankian will both move on in their respective events at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Marion, Ind.

Frankian got through without even having to race on Saturday since the 5,000-meter women’s prelim was canceled because not enough athletes entered. That means she’ll be one of 13 participants in today’s 5,000 final.

Gilbertson, on the other hand, did have to race and did qualify after finishing the men’s 5,000-meter in 15 minutes, 1.74 seconds.

He’ll enter today’s final as the 12th-best qualifier among 16 competitors.

Also competing on Friday was TMC junior Ayla Draper. She finished the 100 hurdles prelim in 15.18, which was not good enough to move on to the final.

Draper still gets to race today in the 400 hurdles final, which she qualified for on Thursday.

Also on Thursday, both Gilbertson and Frankian finished top eight in their respective 10,000 races, which tabs both athletes with All-American honors.

Gilbertson was third in the men’s race and Frankian was fourth in the women’s.

Other TMC athletes scheduled to compete today in the final day of the NAIA finals include John Hurd, Tyler Tockstein and Camden McAlister in the men’s marathon and Hannah Kellerman in the women’s 1,500 final.
