West Ranch girls head basketball coach Randy Smith recently resigned and the Wildcats have filled the position with a familiar face.

Allison Moore, Smith’s assistant for each of his five seasons, has been hired to take over the program.

Moore, a Valencia High graduate and a former varsity player under current Vikings head coach Jerry Mike, becomes the third girls basketball coach in West Ranch history.

She was originally brought into the program under first head coach Ron Manalastas, but never made it to a season with him because of his resignation prior to the 2008-09 season.

“My goal is definitely to build a program,” Moore said. “I remember as a player I really admired what (Mike) did. He was running the same stuff at all the levels. By the time you moved from freshman all the way to varsity, you knew that program so well.”

Moore will have arguably the top returning player in the Foothill League to build around in 2013-14 in senior-to-be and All-Santa Clarita Valley and All-Foothill League first team guard Whitney Branham.

Smith led the Wildcats to the CIF-Southern Section postseason in each of his five seasons, compiling a 74-56 record.

“One of the primary reasons is some of the fire was gone,” Smith said on why he resigned.

Smith, who was also West Ranch’s head track and field coach in the past, will be taking on a heavier class load in the fall.

In other West Ranch coaching news, the school hired Fausto Arana to take over the boys soccer program.

Arana had coached at Hart and Golden Valley highs most recently.

He replaces Fred McGinn, who was the head coach the last two seasons.

West Ranch Athletic Director Cassandra Perez said he resigned to focus on his off-campus job.
