They move quickly at Golden Valley High.

One day after news broke that two prominent positions at the school were opened by resignations, Golden Valley has announced that those vacancies have been filled.

Longtime baseball coach Gino Pomilia will take over as varsity head baseball coach and Sara Soltani takes over the varsity head cross country coach.

Both coaches are recent on-campus hires as teachers at Golden Valley.

Pomilia replaces Scott Drootin, who announced his resignation on Monday after five years at Golden Valley and leading the program to respectability.

Pomilia, who was a teacher at Canyon High this past year, was last the head varsity baseball coach at Redwood High School in Larkspur from 1997 to 2008.

He also coached at Marin Catholic High and Sonoma State University in a coaching career that has spanned parts of four decades.

“There’s always been something about a challenge I’ve liked,” Pomilia said. “I’ve never pushed winning. It’s a byproduct of so many things.”

Pomilia, who was the freshman head coach at Canyon in 2010 (the current senior class of the 2013 co-Foothill League varsity champions) said he’s always used inspirational quotes in his teaching and said he has the first one in mind for his Grizzlies team.

“If you want to accomplish something you’ve never accomplished before, you must be willing to do things you’ve never done before,” he said.

Golden Valley has yet to finish above fourth place in the Foothill League and has never made a CIF-Southern Section postseason appearance.

However, Drootin brought his team close and gave the program stability.

Golden Valley Athletic Director Robert Fisher sees the Pomilia hire as giving it even more.

“Scott did a lot of great things for the Golden Valley baseball program. Took it from I can’t even say mediocre, a struggling program to a place and built that foundation to where now a teacher on campus has a little bit more time and exposure to the kids to be able to help them in many ways beyond baseball,” Fisher said.

Soltani will also provide that.

She replaces off-campus coach Marc Minasian, who held the head job for a year.

Soltani was an assistant on the Grizzlies’ cross country team in 2012 and was the sprints coach for the track and field team in 2013 — two of the most promising programs in the Santa Clarita Valley.

In 2011, Golden Valley’s boys cross country team won a CIF Division II state championship and this past year the boys team finished ninth in the CIF-Southern Section Division II finals and the girls team took 12th.

Both the boys and girls track and field teams won 2013 Foothill League titles.

“She’s been doing great work with the track program and worked with cross country this year,” Fisher said. “The kids really respect her. It was the right fit for the program at this time. She did a great job with track. We know she’ll do a great job with the cross country program.”
