A Canyon Country man accused of killing his father Thursday was arraigned in court Monday on the felony charge of murder, court papers show.

Juan Alexander Mejia, 30, a construction worker who lives on Newhouse Street, appeared in San Fernando Superior Court.

He is being held on $1 million bail, accused of murdering his father Juan Mejia, 53.

On Saturday afternoon, deputies of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station arrested the younger Mejia, after having received a tip that he was spotted in the area, Sgt. Rich Nagler said Sunday.

Deputies sought the public’s help in finding Mejia shortly after the fatal shooting late Thursday.

Shortly before midnight Thursday, the elder Mejia was shot in the head at the family’s home on Newhouse Street, just west of White’s Canyon Road.

Paramedics of the Los Angeles County Fire Department rushed him to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital where he died 52 minutes after midnight, according to Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office.

About nine hours later, deputies released a photograph and description of Juan Alexander Mejia Dubon whom they wanted in connection with the shooting.

The victim, the suspect and the suspect’s mother Candida Dubon have lived at the Newhouse home more than 10 years.
