31-year-old Juan Alexander Mejia Dubon is being sought for questioning in the shooting of his father.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station detectives are asking for public assistance in locating a man who allegedly shot his father in the head late Thursday night in Canyon Country.

The man, identified in a news release as 31-year-old Juan Alexander Mejia Dubon, is described as 5 feet 2 inches tall, 117 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Dubon is being sought for questioning in connection with the shooting of his father at 11:47 p.m. Thursday in the 19000 block of Newhouse Street in Canyon Country, according to a news release.

Dubon’s father was shot in the head and taken to a local hospital where he later died, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau.

Dubon was thought to be in the area just before the shooting, the release said.

Canyon Country resident Bryce Gartner said he was staying at his parents’ house on Newhouse Street when he heard a gunshot sometime after 11 p.m.

“At first I heard it and thought maybe it was a sharp firecracker,” Gartner said. “But about 15 minutes later I walked outside ... and saw the Sheriff’s Department had probably about seven squad cars right down the street.”

Gartner said the Dubon family has lived down the street from his parents’ house for six or seven years.

“We didn’t know them really well,” he said of the family. “They were always pretty quiet.”

Dubon may be armed, and members of the public are warned not to approach or attempt to apprehend him, according to the news release.

Anyone with knowledge of Dubon’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s Detective Bureau at 661-255-1121. Tips can also be given anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
