Saugus Centurions softball is going to be looking back at this one for a while.

In their first-round CIF-Southern Section Division I playoff game with the Orange Lutheran Lancers, the Centurions stranded nine runners in scoring position before falling on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh, 2-1.

Mariah Lopez took a tough loss in the circle, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing six hits with six strikeouts.

“I’m really happy with her performance today. She threw well for a freshman,” said Saugus head coach Julie Watson. “We just didn’t get the hits to back her up.”

Orange Lutheran (23-7 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning off a home run by Jade Vecvanags before Saugus tied the score in the fourth on an RBI double from Dianna Mendoza to score Rachel Shotzbarger.

The Centurions (20-10) had their opportunities along the way, but the score remained 1-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh before the Lancers scratched across the winning run.

In the seventh, Allison Moore led off with a double and Vecvanags walked.

With one out, Olivia Sandusky drove Moore in for the game winner.

“Frustrating loss. I felt like we were winning every single inning, we just weren’t getting it done,” Watson said. “They had one good inning and were able to put it together.”

Saugus will lose six seniors off the team in Shotzbarger, Alanna Layton, Diana Mendoza, Samantha Gonzales, Marissa Fuentes and Natalie Garcia.

“I felt like it was a good season. We had a young team. I’m excited for the future,” Watson said. “It was a rough loss and frustrating, but we have the talent and we’ll be back.”
