Members of the William S. Hart Union High School District board will appoint someone to replace former board member Paul Strickland, rather than holding a special election for the seat.

The board’s Wednesday vote kicks off an appointment process that is expected to take almost a month, according to a tentative time line included in Hart district board documents.

The district will advertise the vacancy and schedule candidate interviews with the goal of selecting an appointee by June 5.

The appointee would serve the remainder of Strickland’s term, which ends in November. Strickland resigned to take a consulting job in Florida.

The College of the Canyons Board of Trustees underwent a similar process earlier this year when Trustee Steve Zimmer was chosen to replace former board member Scott Wilk, who resigned after being elected to the state Assembly.

Hart district board members voted against holding a special election Wednesday night. A special election could cost the district as much as $900,000, according to Hart district spokeswoman Gail Pinsker, since the district would have to pay the entire cost of running the election.

Pinsker said the application for the vacant seat is open to anyone who is a registered voter, is at least 18 years old and lives within the service boundaries of the Hart district.

However, Hart district employees are not eligible to serve on the board, she said.

Those interested in applying for the board vacancy can download the application online at or pick one up in person at the Hart district’s administrative offices, 21515 Centre Pointe Parkway, Santa Clarita.

The city of Santa Clarita is also accepting applications to fill Strickland’s position on the Santa Clarita Arts Commission. Applications for that seat are due by 5 p.m. on May 24 and can be downloaded from the city’s website, Those interested can also call the city at 661-255-4391.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and reside primarily in Santa Clarita. All interested applicants must also submit three letters of recommendation for the position.

Applications should be submitted to the City Clerk’s office, located inside City Hall at 23920 Valencia Boulevard, Suite 110.
