Tanner Skabelund helped lead his West Ranch Wildcats volleyball team to new heights across the last two years.

Skabelund now has a new accomplishment of his own — Foothill League Boys Volleyball Player of the Year.

The league’s coaches chose the senior outside hitter as the league’s top player after West Ranch finished the season as Foothill League champions with a perfect 10-0 league record.

It was West Ranch’s first league title in program history, and it came a year after the Wildcats made their deepest playoff run in school history by advancing to the CIF-Southern Section Division II semifinals in 2012.

Skabelund was a central element to both of those feats.

The 6-foot-11 Brigham Young University commit led the team with 303 kills this year to go along with an accurate .317 hit percentage. He was also an excellent server, tallying a team-high 59 aces while also adding 26 blocks.

The rest of the All-Foothill teams were also released this week.

Joining Skabelund as fellow West Ranch honorees were junior outside hitter Andrew Dieterle and senior setter Christian Cayabyab, who were both named to the first team.

The All-league first team also included Hart senior outside hitter Tanner Tengberg, Hart junior libero Sonny Mueller, Saugus junior outside hitter Max Nua, Saugus senior opposite Tony Balzer and Valencia sophomore outside hitter Kyle Ensing.

On the second team, West Ranch had two names, senior middle blocker Adam Hersh and senior libero Ben Davis. Hart had senior setter Chris LeClair and senior middle blocker Nolyn Preston.

Saugus, Valencia and Canyon each had a player on the second team. Saugus’ was junior outside hitter Zech Lee, Valencia’s was junior setter Logan Riley and Canyon’s was senior setter Andy Kern.

The league’s honorable mentions were Canyon freshman Noah Ozuna, Golden Valley junior Bradley Surette, Hart junior David VanName, Saugus senior Darrick Hughes, Valencia senior Kyle Grant and West Ranch junior Clay Burns.
