Augie Altes, a Valencia resident and first-grader at Helmers Elementary School, has won the national PTA Reflections competition in the category of photography with this photo of his mother dumping water on his father.

Augie Altes, a Valencia resident and first-grader at Helmers Elementary School, has won the national PTA Reflections competition in the category of photography for the primary grade level (K-2).

The National PTA Reflections program is PTA’s cornerstone arts program. It was developed in 1969 by Colorado’s PTA President Mary Lou Anderson to encourage students to explore their talents and express themselves.

Since then, the Reflections Program has inspired millions of students to reflect on a specific theme and create original artwork. Each year, students in Grades pre-K through 12 are recognized for bringing the theme to life through dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.

This year’s theme was the "Magic of a Moment." Augie’s entry, titled "Coldest Splooshy Surprise," featured Augie’s mother, Tiffni, dumping a bucket of cold water on Augie’s unsuspecting father, Steve. Augie captured the water mid-flight using a digital SLR camera on a tripod.

Augie was informed ofnhis win at the national level while attending the state of California’s Reflection awards program in San Jose on Friday, May 3. Augie received a medal and a cash prize of $300 for his wins at the state and national level.

Said Augie, "Dumping water on my dad really paid off!"
