Newbury Park got 15 points from center Doris Park-Sherman in the third quarter and the Panthers ousted Saugus 69-53 Saturday at Newbury Park High School in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division IIA playoffs.

“Their offensive power and strength was too much for us,” said Saugus head coach Kent Eaton.

The Panthers ran a five-out and hit runners consistently to down the Centurions, who finish the season 16-12 and as the Foothill League champion.

Nicole Hicks scored 29 points to lead Saugus and extended her own single-season school record for scoring.

“She did the best she could to carry her team,” Eaton said.

Hicks teamed with Gabrielle Conn, who finished with 10 rebounds, to give Saugus a seven-point lead after the first quarter. But Newbury Park shot 4-of-6 from downtown in the third to go along with its dribble penetration and press defense to pull away.

Amanda Scholl played well defensively, while Kaylynn Martin added 10 points.

The Centurions lose Scholl, Hicks and Conn as part of the senior class. Conn leaves as with the most career points of any girls basketball player in history.

“Losing a senior like Nicole and a senior like Gabby, they are tough to replace,” Eaton said. “Some players will have to step up next season. Martin has been good on defense but she’ll need to step up more offensively, along with Sierra Carpenter.”
