West Ranch opens up play in the CIF-Southern Section Division I playoffs on Thursday.

Coming into the 2013 softball season, there was a lot of hope within the Santa Clarita Valley that come playoff time, a Foothill League team could make a run.

Now that the playoffs brackets have been revealed, it’s going to take a lot for just one team to make that run.

Six area teams are playoff bound, with the three Foothill League teams staring up at some big climbs.

Back-to-back Foothill League champion West Ranch (18-11) hosts Baseline League No. 3 Rancho Cucamonga (15-9) on Thursday.

But a win in that came would likely result in a second-round game against the nation’s No. 5 team, Mater Dei.

Wildcats head coach Bob Shults said there were still a number of things that his team needs to work on and he didn’t have a read on if his team had what it takes to make a run.

But he acknowledged that coming into the postseason after a 10-0 Foothill League run did build momentum.

“Absolutely we discussed that. Though the last game (against Valencia) meant nothing, we had to come in with momentum,” said West Ranch head Bob Shults. “We don’t want to start with a loss coming in.”

Foothill second-place Saugus (20-9) has to play Trinity League second place team Orange Lutheran (22-7).

Valencia (16-12) hosts Trinity League No. 4 Santa Margarita (14-12) Tuesday in a wild-card matchup.

The winner gets Empire League No. 2 Yorba Linda.

Einstein Academy (5-3), the Omega League No. 2, is at Coast Valley No. 2 Coast Union High (14-4) on Thursday in Division VII.

Santa Clarita Christian (10-10) and Trinity Classical Academy (8-8) each have wild-card games Tuesday.

Liberty League at-large team SCCS is at Agape league No. 3 Hesperia Christian (4-9) and Trinity is at Delphic League No. 3 Crossroads (9-11).
