A Van Nuys company is relocating its firm to Santa Clarita, said an executive for the company.

Protection 1 business and home security services is relocating its business from Van Nuys to Santa Clarita, said an executive for the company.

With 65 branches nationwide, the Los Angeles area branch of Protection 1 is moving out to Santa Clarita, said Richard Bishop, district general manager. This is the company’s largest branch in the nation, its flagship branch, he said.

Moving to a storefront building off Centre Point Parkway in the Saugus area, Bishop said he will be moving the company’s regional headquarters along with some 50 employee-positions and 25 subcontractors.

The business and home security company has 30,000 customers, runs 25 service trucks and is a billion-dollar company, Bishop said. It’s commercial and residential business is split 50/50, he said.

“We do a tremendous amount of business, well over $1.2 million a month in recurring revenue,” he said. “Plus we sell $500,000 worth of new business a month in equipment with new installs.

Protection 1, which services all of the greater Los Angeles market, has been at its current location for 18 years but lack of parking in the San Fernando Valley has been an issue, he said.

“We used to get five spots for every 1,000 square feet of space that we rented,” Bishops said. “Now we only get 2.5 parking spots.”

Protection 1 presently occupies 18,000-plus square feet of space, Bishop said. However, in order to provide parking for his 50 employees and work trucks he’d need to lease 10,000 more square feet of space just so he’d have adequate parking.

“Parking is a commodity in Los Angeles,” he said.

Looking for a new building was a headache, too. Bishop looked at some 50 buildings in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley but couldn’t find anything suitable, he said. But then a representative from the SCV Economic Valley Corp. heard that Bishop was looking for new space and contacted him, Bishop said.

“I chatted with Jim Brown briefly and he talked about the benefits of doing business locally,” Bishop said. “I was somewhat aware of it since I live here.”

That’s part of the service we provide – to be part of their team, said Jim Brown, manager of the SCVEDC’s Business Attraction program.

“He’s a prototypical of a small company in the San Fernando Valley that can’t find the space they need,” Brown said. “Their only choice is to take on more space or more buildings and that isn’t cost effective.”

There’s more flexibility in the office and industrial space market in Santa Clarita, Brown said. In most cases, local buildings afford ample parking.

“But, the interesting thing is that for a lot of businesses that move up here from the San Fernando Valley, they oftentimes find that 10 to 25 percent of their work force either lives in the SCV or Antelope Valley,” Brown said.

“That’s one of the reasons they consider the move to Santa Clarita.”

Bishop said the same is true of Protection 1 – quite a few of his employees live in the region, he said. Also, six to seven members of the company’s leadership team live in the area as well. But, after relocating, the company expects to be doing more hiring.

“We’re looking to hire some people in Santa Clarita,” Bishop said. “About 10 people – sales reps and technicians.”
Bishop expects to be operating out of Santa Clarita by Oct. 1.
