Safety and our youthful drivers

Concerning Jim Holt’s article on teens dying in the SCV ("Sand Canyon residents remember youth killed at oak tree 32 years ago," May 8), I can understand his concern.

Being a firefighter, I have on too many occasions responded to accidents involving our young kids. It is heartbreaking to see the loss of life at such a young age.

I was personally affected by this type of accident. I was a baseball coach at Hart High and got to know our players and parents well.

After one of my players graduated and was attending COC and playing baseball, he was traveling home from an evening class and a drunk driver crossed the median and ran head-on into him.

Emergency responders arriving on scene used the jaws of life to free him, and he was pronounced dead due to the trauma of the collision.

The young teens are bring provided vehicles from their parents and there is no accountability for their driving actions.

Speed is the No. 1 cause of accidents in this valley.

Besides "Every 15 Minutes," our teens need to understand that graduating and a long career is what to strive for, not popularity on vehicles or past awards.

Let’s honor them for their accomplishments, not for their life that was stopped short and what they could have been.
