While Sheriff's deputies took the suspect into custody, an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer apparently helped locate him prior to the arrest.
Aaron Kellingsworth, 31, fled from a Valencia shopping center on Magic Mountain Parkway and led Sheriff's deputies on a high-speed car chase before he crashed his van outside the apartment complex. Before deputies could catch him, he ran into the building and hid in a vacant unit.
According to authorities, deputies searched for the suspect, however they returned to the station when they did not find him. Shortly thereafter, an off-duty CHP officer was talking to the apartment manager outside the Bridgeport complex, when the manager told the officer that he left an apartment unit unlocked. When both individuals arrived at the unlocked unit, the off-duty officer, who was armed, searched the premises and found Kellingsworth hiding inside.
Kellingsworth was contained by the officer as he called Sheriff's deputies back to the scene to make the arrest. He was charged with four felony counts, including evasion of arrest, failure to comply with warrant, possession of methamphetamines and possession of burglary tools.
