For the second year in a row, Saugus sophomore Abbey Weitzeil put herself in a great position to win two CIF-Southern Section Division I titles after Thursday’s CIF prelims at the Riverside Aquatics Complex.
Weitzeil was the top qualifier in both the 50-yard freestyle (22.58 seconds) and 100 free (49.22) and will try to repeat as champion in both events.
Last season, Weitzeil was the only female swimmer in Division I to win two individual titles.

“It is more about time for me. If I get a certain time and don’t win, I got my time, so winning’s just a plus,” Weitzeil said. “I just want to hit my time. Eventually my goal is to be 21 seconds (in the 50) and hopefully (Saturday) I can get 48 (in the 100).”

Hart qualified its girls 200-medley relay team for Saturday’s championship final.
Hart’s Matt Johnson qualified sixth in the 200 free and fourth in the 500 free. The Indians’ Mik Ranslem qualified for the championship race in two events, as well, the girls 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, where she placed fourth overall. Asia Antoniuk is through in the 100 fly, Tamara Santoyo will swim the 100 butterfly and Megan Schultz is in the 100 backstroke finals.

For Valencia, Sophie Fiscella made it through to the championship heat in the girls 100 backstroke. Kevin Dai is in the finals of the boys 200 IM.

Dai was forced to work overtime in the event after finishing in a tie with University High’s Michael Schiffer. The two had to take part in a swim-off, which Dai won in 1:51.98 to advance to the finals.
Hart is in the championship swim of the girls 400 free relay and Saugus is through on the boys side.
