The City of Santa Clarita will be at the center of the cycling world on Tuesday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 15, when the 2013 Amgen Tour of California returns to Santa Clarita for the fifth time in race history. The Stage 3 Finish and Stage 4 Start of the race provide electric and exciting fan experiences as the top riders in the world participate in the event. Both stages of the race are anchored around the Westfield Valencia Town Center and will provide a multitude of activities and excellent vantage points to watch the race.

On Tuesday, May 14, 2013, Santa Clarita will host the Finish of Stage 3, one of the longest lengths of the race at 111.8 miles, starting from Marie Kerr Park in Palmdale and ending on Magic Mountain Parkway. The stage will feature a 22-mile climb up Lake Hughes Road and follow the route of the famous Furnace Creek 508, the ultra-endurance race through Santa Clarita. The peloton will likely break apart on the massive climb, but an 18 mile descent to the finish will give riders a chance to regroup and mount a large field sprint toward the finish line.

Spectators can line up along many parts of the picturesque route, but one of the best spots to catch the action on May 14 will be at the Lifestyle Festival at the Westfield Valencia Town Center. Beginning at 11:00 a.m. along Magic Mountain Parkway, between Citrus and Auto Center Drive, the Lifestyle Festival will include trick riders, exhibitors and a beer garden. Live coverage of the race, as seen on NBC Sports Network, will be televised at the festival beginning at 2 p.m.

Preceding the Finish stage on Tuesday, May 14, spectators are invited to join Breakaway from Cancer Santa Clarita Champion and local resident, Nancy Eckels for the Breakaway Mile, a special half to one-mile walk that honors and celebrates cancer survivors worldwide. The event is free to the public and participants will receive special t-shirts to wear at the event and are invited to view the race action from a private, reserved viewing area. The walk will begin at 2 p.m. at the Mercedes-Benz of Valencia located at 23355 Valencia Boulevard. To register for the Breakaway Mile, visit AmgenTourOfCalifornia.com/BreakawayMile

The following morning on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, the City will kick off the grueling start of Stage 4 beginning on Town Center Drive in Santa Clarita. Riders will race out of town north to the finish location on Cabrillo Boulevard in Santa Barbara. Veteran Amgen Tour of California racers will recognize this stage from past races, but they will be riding in reverse. After the desert terrain of Stage 3, riders will welcome ocean breezes as they descend to the finish in Coastal Santa Barbara.

For this stage of the race, the best place to view the Tour is between Abercrombie & Finch and BJ’s Restaurant at Town Center Drive located at the Westfield Valencia Town Center. The start stage allows spectators an opportunity to interact with the riders, get their autographs and hear live interviews of the cyclists before they race towards the small beach town of Santa Barbara.

The arrival of the Amgen Tour of California will mean changing traffic patterns and temporary closures for affected streets throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. Residents and businesses are strongly urged to utilize the City’s website SantaClaritaTourOfCA.com to plan ahead and minimize any commuting inconvenience.
