No matter how the lineup was arranged, West Ranch Wildcats boys tennis was going to have a tough time.

West Ranch was dropped 17-1 in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs on Wednesday against the Hacienda League champion Rowland Heights Raiders at Rowland High.

“They were just the same player, one through nine,” said West Ranch head coach Eric Spiecker of Rowland Heights.

The Wildcats (7-9) got their lone set win from their No. 1 doubles pairing of Brandon Oh and Jonathan Lee, who won 6-2 against Rowland’s No. 3 doubles team.

Lee and Oh lost two other close sets on the day, 7-5 and 6-4.

Other than that, it was a cluster of mostly lopsided sets in favor of the Raiders.

“At least at the top of (our) doubles lineup did well, but their singles lineup was just balanced, talented and strong,” Spiecker said.

West Ranch, which finished third in the Foothill League this year, was coming off a 13-5 victory over Oxnard in the wild-card round on Tuesday.

The first round wasn’t as kind to the Wildcats.

On the positive side, West Ranch will lose just one starting player to graduation and looks to have an experienced cast of players coming back.

“I think we’re going to roll it up and be better next year and my kids have been really motivated,” Spiecker said.
