Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies have arrested a third suspect thought to be involved in a string of burglaries at four Santa Clarita Valley schools during spring break last month, an official said Wednesday.

A pair of deputies from the Sheriff’s Station arrested 22-year-old La Puente resident Michael Estrada shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday, Deputy Josh Dubin said.

Estrada was initially arrested in the 27300 block of Fahren Court in Canyon Country and was allegedly in possession of methamphetamine. He has since been arrested for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, according to Dubin.

Estrada will be charged in connection with a burglary at Sierra Vista Junior High School, according to Detective Mark Barretto with the SCV Sheriff’s Station’s Career Offender Burglary Robbery Apprehension unit.

Barretto said he could not comment Wednesday on what led detectives to believe Estrada was involved in the burglary as the incident is still an ongoing investigation.

Barretto also said he could not comment on whether further arrests are pending in the case.

Sierra Vista was one of four local schools burglarized during spring break in early April. Another school in the William S. Hart Union High School District, Hart High School, and two schools in the Newhall School District — Newhall Elementary School and Old Orchard Elementary School — were also burglarized, according to officials.

Electronics such as televisions and computers were reported stolen from the schools.

Estrada is the third person to be arrested in connection with the burglaries. Gonzalo Daniel Ortiz, 20, of Newhall was arrested and pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree commercial burglary last week. He was sentenced to one year in jail.

Another young man, 17 years old, was also arrested. His name was not released because he is a minor.
