Cats can’t overcome early goal

West Ranch boys soccer was eliminated from the CIF-Southern Section Division III playoffs Friday after a 1-0 loss at Montclair Prep.

The Cavaliers (21-1-2) tallied the game's only goal in the 15th minute and fended off several Wildcat (11-7-5) attempts in the final 60 minutes.

"We came out a little flat," said West Ranch head coach Mo Burgess. "Once they scored that first goal, we picked things up, but we weren't able to break through."

Sergio Torres had a pair of solid chances on goal for West Ranch, but Billy Morales had the Wildcats best opportunity when he broke free for a shot in the second half.

"It was just a bad break really," Burgess said. "It was more than the ball found their keeper than the keeper found the ball, but sometimes that is just how it goes."

Poor field conditions forced both teams to play more on the edges of the field, making it difficult to put shots on goal.

"The field was different than what we are used to playing on," Burgess said. "But, what it really came down to was that both keepers played well, and they got that one shot early before we were totally locked in."

For Montclair, the win is an opportunity for a team that didn't lose a game in league play to move forward.

Even with the loss, Burgess looks at the Wildcats' playoff performance as a very positive step for West Ranch soccer.

"The growth we've had as a team is really what I'm going to look back on when I think about this team," Burgess said. "All 21 guys on this team bought in to what we're building here. I told them that this is step one, and they should be proud of what they accomplished."
