The search continued Thursday for a Canyon Country transient who allegedly opened fire on Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies Wednesday night, leading to an hours-long manhunt that did not turn up the suspect.

The man believed to be the shooter, Corey Kieffer, is described as a white male, age 28, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and 140 pounds, according to Deputy Josh Dubin.

Kieffer, who has brown hair and hazel eyes, is a transient who is known to frequent the area of the wash near the intersection of Camp Plenty Road and Soledad Canyon Road, according to Dubin.

He is also a known abuser of narcotics, according to a news release from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
Sheriff’s Department officials say deputies approached Kieffer while he was riding a bicycle near the Canyon Oaks Condos in the area of Adon Avenue and Sierra Highway around 7:25 p.m. Wednesday.

Kieffer then abandoned his bicycle and ran into the wash, they said. In the process, he reached into his backpack, turned toward the deputies and fired at them. The deputies were uninjured and returned fire; it was not known if Keiffer was injured.

Deputies locked down the area, urging residents to stay inside and keep their doors locked. Residents trying to get home were kept outside the perimeter and not allowed home until about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, a resident said.

The search involved K-9 units and helicopter as well as deputies on foot. But Kieffer was not found, and he was still at large Thursday evening.

Dubin said it appears a gun was recovered in the area near the shooting, but it is too soon to tell if it is the one used by Kieffer.
